Opay Ensures Full Consent for Every Account

Approximately 48 hours ago, we received information regarding active accounts/wallets on our OPay app. Allegedly, these accounts were created without the knowledge or consent of their owners. In response, we promptly initiated an investigation to ascertain the legitimacy of these claims, ensuring that all OPay wallets adhere to regulatory requirements during the registration process.

Upon thorough investigation, we confirmed that these accounts were indeed established by the respective owners, albeit at different points in time, primarily between 2019 and 2020. Upon contacting these individuals, some expressed uncertainty about the account creation, while others acknowledged their involvement. We have proactively reached out to at least four complainants on social media to address their concerns, striving for swift resolution.

It’s crucial to emphasize that a portion of these accounts has remained dormant since their inception. As a law-abiding and strictly regulated entity, we have offered these individuals the choice to retain or close the accounts based on their preferences.

It’s worth noting that the OPay wallet can only be opened through the CBN-established registration process, requiring OTP (one-time password) and ID authentication from the user’s phone to proceed. Furthermore, OPay has never initiated the creation or operation of accounts on behalf of any individual.

In conclusion, we encourage anyone with similar concerns to reach out to us through our official communication channels, where we will promptly address their issues. As a brand, we prioritize our customers’ needs and take pride in our commitment to regulatory compliance.

Sincerely,
Adekunle Adeyemi
