The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, the top Yoruba monarch, has died.

Alaafin Adeyemi, the third from the Alowodu Ruling House, died in the Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State in South-West Nigeria, in the late hours of Friday.

According to palace sources, the remains of the senior Yoruba traditional ruler were taken to Oyo town, 62 kilometers from Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, in the early hours of Saturday, and traditional rites began.
He was 83 years old and had ruled for 52 years, making him the longest reigning Alaafin in history.

After receiving the word of the monarch’s passing from the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Akinade, the head of the ‘Oyo Mesi,’ who would now oversee Oyo town until a new Alaafin is installed, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, is anticipated to make an official announcement.

The monarch had been ill, and a plan had been put in place to fly him out of the country before he died late Friday night.

According to a source acquainted with the medical travel plan, his and a few wives’ tickets had already been purchased.

His death happened months after the deaths of two other senior Oyo State monarchs, Saliu Adetunji, the Olubadan of Ibadan, and Jimoh Oyewumi, the Soun of Ogbomoso. All of this happened in less than five minutes.

The Soun throne remains vacant despite the installation of a new Olubadan.

On October 15, 1938, Alaafin Adeyemi was born Lamidi Olayiwola Atanda Adeyemi into the Alowolodu Royal House of the famous Oyo town.

On November 18, 1970, he was crowned, succeeding Oba Gbadegesin Ladigbolu I. Iku Baba Yeye was his popular name.

He was the permanent chairperson of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs during his reign.

With the death of Alaafin Adeyemi, the Agunloye Ruling House now has the task of producing the next Oyo monarch. Alaafin Ladigbolu, Mr Adeyemi’s predecessor, was from the Agunloye House.
