Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the secretive startup founded by former OpenAI co-founder and alignment lead Ilya Sutskever, has emerged from two years in stealth to announce a long-term tie-up with Nvidia.
The agreement pairs an undisclosed investment with access to Nvidia’s Vera Rubin GPU platform, a boost expected to lift SSI’s compute resources “by an order of magnitude.”
People familiar with the arrangement say Nvidia’s investment runs into the billions, with Bloomberg pegging the figure at $5 billion. Already an SSI backer, Nvidia said it entered the compute partnership to “accelerate SSI’s next stage of growth” after gaining rare insight into the company’s guarded research.
Sutskever framed the deal as a moment to push his work further. “We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so. We are confident that our big bet on the Vera Rubin platform will take us to the next level,” he said.
SSI is chasing what it calls a “straight shot” toward safe, aligned artificial superintelligence, deliberately avoiding commercial distractions. The two firms will also collaborate on advancing Nvidia’s current and future compute platforms.
To date SSI has raised $7 billion and holds a $32 billion post-money valuation, with investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, Lightspeed Venture Partners and Sequoia Capital Partners.
