Broadcaster and Arise Television anchor Rufai Oseni has criticised the Federal Government’s newly unveiled $1 billion Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project, HOPE-SP, describing it as a disguised form of vote buying.
Speaking on The Morning Show a day after the scheme was launched in Abuja, Oseni questioned why the initiative was being rolled out roughly six months before the 2027 general elections.
The programme, presented at the State House Banquet Hall alongside four other schemes, is part of what the government describes as an effort to strengthen its poverty-reduction and humanitarian response.
Oseni, however, likened it to the “trader money” handouts of previous years and asked why the intervention was only coming now, suggesting the timing was politically motivated.
He also raised doubts about the sustainability of offering loans and business support in an economy weighed down by high inflation, questioning how viable such businesses would be in the current market.
