Premier League club Newcastle have secured the services of Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba, with both clubs confirming the transfer on Friday.

The France youngster has put pen to paper on a five-year contract at St James’ Park.

Reports put the value of the deal at 35 million euros ($40 million), with Monaco set to receive a share of any future sale of the 20-year-old.

Bamba, who joined Monaco in 2021, made 25 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side, comprising 18 league games, two cup ties and five Champions League outings. Monaco finished fifth in the French top flight last season.

Speaking after the move, the youngster expressed his delight at the switch. “I was very excited when I heard Newcastle were interested in signing me. I know about the history of the club and I’ve visited the stadium already, which is amazing. I can’t wait to be on the pitch there and hope to have some great times with the fans,” he said.

“I’m excited to test myself in a new league, the biggest league in the world. I learned a lot last season and now I feel ready for this new opportunity. I will give my all for this club,” he added.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe welcomed the addition, saying: “Aladji adds depth and a range of qualities to our midfield options, with huge potential for growth. His development since breaking through at Monaco has been really impressive and something we believe we can help him build on.”

Bamba becomes Newcastle’s fourth signing of the summer. The Magpies ended last season in 12th place in the Premier League.
