Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped to fourth place in Africa in the newly released FIFA world rankings, even though they retained their 26th position globally.
The slide was triggered by Egypt’s strong showing at the 2026 World Cup, where the Pharaohs reached the Round of 16 before bowing out 3-2 to Argentina.
That run was enough to lift Egypt above Nigeria on the continental table, a further reminder of the Super Eagles’ absence from the global showpiece.
Nigeria missed out on the tournament after finishing behind South Africa in their qualifying group and then losing to DR Congo in the play-offs.
Morocco now sit top of the African standings in sixth place worldwide following their quarter-final appearance, ahead of Senegal in second on the continent and 18th globally.
Egypt occupy third in Africa and 24th in the world, with Algeria rounding off the continental top five at 29th, as Spain lifted the World Cup after edging Argentina 1-0 in the final.
Attention now turns to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which begin in September 2026, with Nigeria drawn in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania across three international windows through March 2027.
