The Super Falcons of Nigeria ran into an unwelcome distraction as they regrouped for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Friday, with several players falling victim to theft at their base.
Nigeria kicked off their WAFCON 2026 camp on July 15 in Mohammedia, a coastal city in Morocco, before relocating on Friday to the Marriott Hotel in Rabat, where they will be stationed for their group-stage fixtures.
On arrival at the hotel, a number of players, among them Chiamaka Nnadozie, Esther Okoronkwo and Michelle Alozie, found that cash and personal belongings had gone missing from their rooms.
The affected stars took to social media to warn the public against patronising the hotel, revealing that more than $1,000 had been stolen in total.
The players’ outcry appears to have yielded swift results. According to veteran Nigerian sports journalist Obong Colin, a suspect has since been arrested and has confessed to the crime.
The culprit is expected to hand back all the stolen items and will face prosecution over the incident.
The resolution offers the team some much-needed peace of mind as attention turns fully to the pitch. The tournament gets underway with Algeria against Senegal, with Nigeria opening their campaign against Malawi.
