Nigerian rapper and activist, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has stated that he has never thrown his public support behind any politician or political party.
The entertainer explained that his advocacy is centred on encouraging citizens to take part in elections rather than championing particular candidates. In his words, “I’ve never, in 2023 or at any point, openly supported any politician or political party.”
According to Falz, his priority remains the promotion of free and fair elections and a higher turnout of voters as a way of strengthening the country’s democracy.
He described the political system as cyclical, noting that politicians simply get “reshuffled” over and over again, a situation he said makes it difficult to vouch for any of them. He, however, hinted that he could endorse a candidate if he ever found one he believed in “100 per cent.”
Responding to the argument that votes count for nothing, the singer countered that politicians would not bother buying votes if elections were truly meaningless.
Falz further called for the live electronic transmission of election results as a means of improving transparency in the process.
He maintained that a massive turnout of voters on election day would make it “incredibly difficult” for anyone to rig the outcome.
