Chidozie Awaziem Joins Konyaspor as Nigerian Contingent in Turkey Grows

Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has completed a transfer to Turkish Super Lig club Konyaspor, ending a period of uncertainty over his future after Nantes suffered relegation last season.

Turkey emerged as his destination this week, with Konyaspor confirming a two-year contract that runs until the summer of 2028. Awaziem will wear the number 15 shirt.

The move takes Awaziem to his tenth European club across a 12-year career. Konyaspor have played in Turkey’s top flight since 2013/14 and lifted the Turkish Cup in 2017.

He joins a sizeable group of Nigerians now based in Turkey, including Victor Osimhen at Galatasaray, Ibrahim Olawoyin at Rizespor, and Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu at Trabzonspor. Kelechi Iheanacho also moved to second-tier Bursaspor this window, while Gift Orban joined newly promoted Amedspor on loan.

Awaziem’s early focus will be helping Konyaspor secure their Super Lig status and make a run in the Turkish Cup.
