The Federal Government has begun receiving applications for its Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices (C.L.I.C.K.D.) Programme, which allows eligible Nigerians to acquire smartphones, laptops and tablets on consumer credit.
Run by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) alongside the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the scheme aims to widen access to digital devices while promoting locally assembled products. During this pilot phase, applicants must meet a number of conditions to qualify.
First, they must state their state of residence, choosing from Nigeria’s 36 states or the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, information the government will use to profile applicants and manage the programme nationwide. Second, applicants must give their employment status, selecting from categories that include salary earner, freelancer or self-employed, business owner, student, job seeker and National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member. Disclosing monthly income is optional, with brackets ranging from below N100,000 to more than N1 million.
Third, applicants must belong to an eligible digital skills programme. The first phase is restricted to participants in the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent, 3MTT, programme, though the portal also lists Andela Learning Community, Learn2Earn, ALX, HNG Internship, AltSchool Africa and Genesys Tech Hub, hinting that later phases could take in participants from those bodies.
Fourth, applicants must select a device, either a smartphone, laptop or tablet, and explain how it will be used. The options include learning and professional certifications, remote work, freelancing, software development, business expansion, content creation, and school or other educational purposes, with more than one reason allowed where applicable.
Fifth, applicants must agree to verification by confirming that their information is accurate, consenting to be contacted about the application, and authorising CREDICORP and its partners to verify the details to determine eligibility. Sixth, they must indicate how they heard about the programme, choosing from 3MTT, social media, friend or family, school, employer, Google Search or other.
