An investigation has found that adolescent girls seeking family planning in South-West Nigeria often meet a health system that is inconsistent, inaccessible or openly judgemental.
In Ibadan, a 17-year-old identified as Bisola studies for her school exams with her child strapped to her back — two years after she nearly died giving birth. “I wasn’t ready,” she said.
At 15, afraid of getting pregnant before finishing school, she sought contraception at a nearby primary health centre.
But instead of confidential counselling, she said the questions came first — “Who brought you here? Are your parents aware?” — asked within earshot of other patients.
