Lawyer Onyedikachi Ifedi, a member of the Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Global Legal Consortium, says the Federal Government has effectively abandoned its chance to contest the appeal filed by IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu against his conviction, after letting the response deadline expire without filing anything.
“Nigeria has abandoned the appeal. The Federal Government filed nothing. Time expired. No brief. No substantive defence to the appeal. That silence speaks volumes,” Ifedi said, adding that the trial judge, Justice James Omotosho, allegedly committed “over 150 grave errors” during Kanu’s trial.
Ifedi argued the original charge was defective and that the court lacked jurisdiction to try Kanu in the first place. The development follows earlier accusations from Kanu’s family and defence team that the government was avoiding a hearing on the appeal, with IPOB threatening to boycott the 2027 election in the South-East if it isn’t heard.
