Newly appointed Germany head coach, Jurgen Klopp, has warned that he could abandon the role if the media fails to leave his family alone.
The former Liverpool manager issued the warning at his first press conference since being handed a four-year contract to lead the national team.
Klopp, who takes over from Julian Nagelsmann after Germany’s disappointing World Cup exit, said he cherished the position but would not think twice about quitting if his family became a target of unwanted attention.
According to BBC Sport on Friday, Klopp declared, “If you behave badly and don’t leave my family in peace then I’ll be gone, I’ll just turn away. I love this job but I am always ready to call it quits if need be.”
The 59-year-old is returning to the dugout for the first time since leaving Liverpool in 2024, when he admitted he had “run out of energy” after a successful nine-year reign at Anfield.
He described the German assignment as the crowning moment of his coaching journey. “Jurgen Klopp is not going to have any ‘career’ after the national team,” he said. “This is the pinnacle, the absolutely high point of my footballing career as coach. I will give everything I have got.”
Klopp is expected to steer Germany through the 2030 World Cup, with his opening assignment a Nations League clash against the Netherlands on 24 September.
His arrival has sparked huge excitement across the country, though he inherits the task of restoring belief in a side that has faltered in recent major tournaments.
