South African DJ and producer Maphorisa says South Africans effectively gave Nigerians the “green light” to embrace Amapiano through cross-border collaborations.
He pointed to “Sponono,” a record involving Kabza De Small alongside Nigerian stars Burna Boy and Wizkid, as a turning point that opened the sound to a wider Nigerian audience.
“I knew that we gave them a green light to do Amapiano,” Maphorisa said, describing the song as hugely influential.
He also named Don Jazzy, D’banj, P-Square and Davido among the Nigerian figures who influenced him.
