MLS Opens Investigation Into Inter Miami Over Casemiro Signing

Major League Soccer has opened an investigation into alleged tampering surrounding Inter Miami’s signing of 34-year-old Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.

The player has joined Inter Miami on a contract running through the end of the 2027 MLS season, with an option to extend it to June 2029.

At the heart of the inquiry is the league’s discovery rights mechanism, which hands clubs first refusal on negotiating with incoming players. Los Angeles Galaxy held those rights to Casemiro, though Inter Miami insist they acquired them before finalising the transfer.

In a statement, MLS said: “The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete.”

Casemiro left Manchester United after both sides opted against extending his contract, bowing out having made 160 appearances for the club.

The midfielder also enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Real Madrid, where he lifted five UEFA Champions League titles, and now links up with a star-studded Inter Miami squad featuring Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and Sergio Reguilon.

Co-owner David Beckham welcomed the deal, hailing Casemiro as a seasoned winner. It is the second time the franchise has come under MLS scrutiny, having been fined $2 million in 2021 for roster and salary breaches tied to the signing of Blaise Matuidi.
