Mark van Bommel is poised to become the new head coach of Belgium, with an agreement reached to keep the Dutchman in charge of the national side until June 2028.
Van Bommel is expected to succeed Rudi Garcia once Belgium’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign is wrapped up. Although contracts are yet to be signed, all parties are said to have reached a full understanding, with an official announcement to follow the completion of the paperwork.
The development was confirmed on Wednesday by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who wrote on X: “Mark van Bommel as new Belgium head coach, here we go! Deal in place until June 2028 for van Bommel, ready to replace Rudi Garcia.”
The appointment marks Van Bommel’s first job in international management after a series of club roles. The former Netherlands captain has previously taken charge of PSV Eindhoven, VfL Wolfsburg and Royal Antwerp, steering the Belgian club to a memorable league and cup double in the 2022–23 season.
Belgium will be hoping he can usher in a fresh era for the Red Devils as they turn their attention to qualifying for UEFA Euro 2028 and rebuilding a side still in transition. Their World Cup run this year ended at the quarter-final stage, where they showed moments of quality before bowing out to Spain.
