Security stakeholders in Zamfara State have called for stronger surveillance of the state’s porous borders to stop the inflow of arms and drugs driving banditry and kidnapping across the North-West.
The appeal was made on Wednesday when Governor Dauda Lawal received a delegation led by former Colombian National Security Adviser, Sergio Jaramillo, in Gusau.
The meeting drew officials from the Office of the National Security Adviser, security agencies, traditional rulers, civil society groups and academics.
Participants urged the state government to tighten border monitoring and said any negotiation with bandits should only be conducted from a position of strength, with traditional institutions more actively involved.
The State Commissioner of Police, Ahmad Bello, said the main obstacle in the fight against banditry was not intelligence gathering but operational shortcomings, and called for improved capacity to restore order.
