Nollywood’s Packed August: ‘Sweet 16’, ‘Ikenga’, ‘Kosoko’ Lead Cinema Rush

4 views 0 comments

August is shaping up to be one of Nollywood’s busiest theatrical months of the year, with a tightly packed release corridor squeezing several major titles into just three weeks.

Sweet 16 opens the run on August 14, before a crowded August 21 slate brings Ikenga, Aláhùn, Abujaa and A Father’s Secret to screens on the same day. Kosoko then closes the month on August 28.

The clustering reflects both the health and the growing pains of a booming local box office. Nigerian cinemas have never had more homegrown product to choose from, but distributors are increasingly wrestling over the same weekends, forcing films to fight for screens and showtimes.

For audiences, it means a rare abundance of choice at the multiplex. For producers, the crowded calendar is a test of marketing muscle — the titles that cut through the noise stand to reap the rewards of a market that has proven it will turn out in numbers for stories told in its own voice.
