Akwa Ibom indigenes and other Nigerians stranded in South Africa have appealed to Governor Umo Eno and the Federal Government for urgent help, saying attacks on foreigners have continued despite official assurances.
Speaking in separate telephone interviews on Thursday, some of those affected said the hostility was deep-rooted and unlikely to ease quickly, even after the deaths of several foreigners and the destruction of businesses.
Bassey Clinton Akpan, from Ukanafun Local Government Area, said South Africans had continued to openly show hostility towards foreigners, particularly Nigerians, and warned of another planned march that could target foreign-owned businesses.
He said many Nigerians now gather daily around the Nigerian Consulate hoping for news of another evacuation, noting that the five aircraft earlier deployed by the Federal Government were not enough.
“Many of us sold our properties, moved out of our apartments and are now stranded, without food or means of livelihood,” Akpan said.
