Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has declared that an elected civilian president is capable of behaving like a dictator, using the remark to criticise the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for inviting former Liberian President George Weah to its 66th Annual General Conference in Port Harcourt.
Weah, in his keynote address, had stated that “a tyrant with a certificate of return is still a tyrant.”
Reacting on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Falana said Weah himself had shown scant regard for the rule of law and the press during his time in office, making his presence at the event questionable.
The senior advocate said he was well placed to make the claim, having personally handled cases in which judgments of the ECOWAS Court were ignored under Weah’s administration.
According to Falana, a leader who disregards court rulings and harasses the media cannot be considered a genuine democrat — traits he said defined Weah’s presidency.
