Australia international Cristian Volpato has reportedly returned a positive roadside test for cocaine after being pulled over twice in a single night in Sydney, according to the Mirror.
The midfielder was part of the Socceroos squad at this summer’s World Cup staged across North America.
New South Wales police say Volpato was first stopped at around 11pm local time for driving between 86 and 94km/h in a 60km/h zone. A roadside breathalyser test at that point came back negative.
Roughly two hours later, at about 1am, the 22-year-old was allegedly pulled over again while driving a BMW Coupe at 109km/h on the 60km/h Anzac Bridge. On this occasion a roadside drug test is said to have flagged positive for cocaine, with a second sample taken for additional analysis.
Volpato was issued a speeding fine and is reported to have had his international driver’s licence suspended for six months, barring him from driving in New South Wales. He has not been charged with any criminal offence, and police say their enquiries are continuing.
The midfielder made three appearances for Australia at the World Cup. After sitting out the opener against Turkey as an unused substitute, he played in the group games against the USA and Paraguay, as well as the round-of-32 penalty shootout defeat to Egypt.
He only switched his allegiance to Australia in May, having previously turned out for Italy at youth level. Before the World Cup, his sole senior cap for the Socceroos came in a June warm-up fixture against Switzerland.
In a statement carried by Australian outlet ABC, the country’s football body said it “was aware of the allegations involving one of our players.”
