France have a new man at the helm. The French Football Federation used its official X account on Tuesday to confirm that Zinedine Zidane will take over as head coach of the senior men’s national side.
The decision arrives roughly a fortnight after Didier Deschamps stepped away, his departure sealed by a fourth-place finish at the World Cup. His farewell outing was a wild 6-4 loss to England.
Zidane, now 54, is set to open his tenure with a UEFA Nations League trip to face Turkiye, before welcoming Italy to the Stade de France on October 2.
Deschamps leaves behind a remarkable body of work. Across 14 years he took charge of 185 matches and claimed 120 wins, delivering the 2018 World Cup crown, the 2020-21 Nations League title, and reaching the finals of Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup.
The two men go back a long way. Both were part of the France squad that lifted the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, sharing the pitch as teammates during that golden era.
Zidane also carries an elite coaching pedigree. During his time at Real Madrid he steered the club to three straight Champions League triumphs in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
