The Lagos State Police Command has warned residents against taking the law into their own hands after a man identified as Basit was killed by a mob on Lagos Island, just weeks before his wedding.
The deceased, said to have recently returned to Nigeria for the wedding, was reportedly beaten to death in the Patey area after his vehicle struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road on the night of September 2. Some suspects have since been arrested.
Police spokesperson SP Abimbola Adebisi described jungle justice as a crime that can amount to murder or manslaughter. “Without ambiguity, jungle justice is murder. It is not justice. It is a crime,” she said.
