Nepal-China border flood: over 800 dead, 3,000 missing

The death toll from devastating floods near the Nepal-China border rose above 800 on Sunday, with rescuers racing to find survivors.

Authorities said more than 3,000 people remain missing on both sides of the border.

The disaster struck the Gyirong area in China’s Tibet region and Nepal’s Rasuwa district, when a torrent of ice, rock, mud and debris swept through on Wednesday, destroying towns, roads and bridges.

The US Geological Survey said a massive glacier collapse and landslide triggered the catastrophe, which Nepalese officials linked to flash floods on their side of the Himalayas.
