Police summon VeryDarkMan over checkpoint kidnapping claim

The Nigeria Police Force has invited social media critic Martins Vincent Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan, to provide evidence for a claim he made at the recent Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) conference in Port Harcourt.

He had alleged that officers manning checkpoints on major highways pass information about travellers’ identities and movements to kidnappers and bandits, thereby aiding abductions for ransom.

In a statement on Thursday, Force Public Relations Officer CSP Ani Iniedu rejected the allegation, insisting that officers at checkpoints are deployed to prevent crime and protect citizens.

The police said the same officers routinely confront the very criminals accused of receiving such tip-offs, and challenged the activist to produce his evidence without delay.

The Force added that any credible information provided would be treated with urgency and thoroughly investigated.
