YPP pulls out of Anambra council poll, alleges violence

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has withdrawn from the local government election in Anambra East, accusing the ruling party and the state government of orchestrating violence to scare off the opposition.

Anambra held council polls on Saturday, with the ruling APGA fielding chairmanship candidates in all 21 LGAs and councillorship candidates across 326 wards. Most opposition parties fielded no candidates; only the YPP contested in Anambra East.

The party’s collation agent for the area, Charles Ifediora, said APGA and the government connived to instigate violence on election day, forcing the boycott.

He added that one of the party’s female members was struck by gunfire during the unrest and was rushed to hospital.
